The New
York State Independent System Operator (NYISO) is facing increasing
challenges in its management of the State’s electric
grid. The lack of investment in generation and infrastructure
has forced the NYISO to look for alternative ways to help
alleviate the strains on system demand.
The Special Case Resource (SCR) and Emergency
Demand Response Program (EDRP) initiatives were created
as a means of helping reduce electricity usage at times when
system constraints are at their highest. Energy users as
small as 100 kilowatts may aggregate to form load-shedding
groups which may be called upon to help reduce the level of
electricity required to serve the State’s growing demand.
As an SCR and EDRP participant, the NYISO, in essence, treats
you like a generator. Your ability to shed load at peak
times is an asset that they may call upon, which in turn assures
an added revenue stream to your company.
